Setting

Dallas was founded in 1841 on the Trinity River. Today’s downtown is located within a loop of freeways.

Neiman Marcus (headquartered in Dallas) has its flagship department store downtown.

Trains

Amtrak’s Texas Eagle goes north from Union Station (1916) to St. Louis and Chicago, and south to Austin and San Antonio, continuing west to Los Angeles.

Trinity Railway Express (1996) is a 35-mile commuter line between Dallas Union Station and downtown Fort Worth.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) has four light rail lines serving Dallas and nearby suburbs. Service began in 1996. The McKinney Avenue streetcar goes about one mile from the Arts District to the Uptown area.

Museums

The Dallas Museum of Art, the Sixth Floor Museum, the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Dallas World Aquarium are located downtown.

Theaters

Downtown Dallas has no movie theaters; the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (2016) is just south of downtown. The Majestic Theater (1921) is a renovated movie theater that now has concerts, plays, and special events.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra plays at the Meyerson Symphony Center (1989). The AT&T Performing Arts Center (2009) hosts the Dallas Opera, touring Broadway shows, and a variety of other events. Dallas Summer Musicals also presents touring shows at the Music Hall at Fair Park (1925), east of downtown. The Dallas Theater Center is also downtown.

Sports

The NBA Dallas Mavericks and the NHL Dallas Stars play at the American Airlines Center (2001), just north of downtown. The Texas Rangers of the American League and the NFL Dallas Cowboys play in Arlington, west of Dallas.
